Road Trip to Harbour Island [Bahamas]

In Governor’s Harbour we rented a car from Lutra Car Rental for a road trip back North to Harbour Island. Renting a car is not an easy task when calling last minute and finding out most cars have been rented for the weekend. Luckily, IJ had one for us and would be ready early the next morning. We were relieved even if we were paying $50/day. Actually not a bad price compared to some areas in the Bahamas. Once we had that set up, we went to the Fish Fry!

The next morning, we felt the effects of our night out at the Fish Fry (every Friday in Governor’s Harbour) but were excited to visit the popular Harbour Island and picked up our car for the day. Side note: We could have brought our sailboat to this island but decided against paying for a guide to lead us through the Devil’s Backbone (narrow path between shallow and jagged-edged reef). We took the safer, more affordable route and rented a car.

Road Trip!

We met IJ in the heart of Governor’s Harbour where an exciting game of soccer was being played. There was an announcer and everything and really helped with building the excitement for each teams’ fans. IJ had actually rented out his own car to us so we gave him a ride back to his home in James Cistern.

While on the road trip, we got distracted with other attractions along the way too. The Cliffs were amazing on the way there and loved seeing the Sapphire Blue Hole. We also enjoyed Preacher’s Cave but I’m saving that for a post dedicated to the many caves in Eleuthera. Oh and look at the avocados and pineapple I got from a fruit/veggie stand! Seriously the best fruit I’ve ever had.

Harbour Island

The ferry over to Harbour Island is only $5 per person and takes maybe 10 minutes to get there. You simply walk up to a boat that isn’t at capacity and find a seat. We boarded one immediately upon arrival. The ride was smooth and not too crowded giving us the opportunity to sight see on the trip over.

Upon arrival, the docks are bustling with people selling golf carts and giving directions to where you might want to go. We did decide to rent a golf cart because we’d only be there for one day and wanted to see as much as we were able. It’s really the best way to see any new island.

After being on the island of Eleuthera for a while, it was a really strange sight to see so many people in one place. This is a vacation destination similar to Hope Town but a bit more high end. It is the Mackinac Island of the Bahamas without horses (We’re from Michigan).

Our Day’s Events

Our day in Harbour Island consisted of us mostly driving around the island in the golf cart we rented. It was fun to cruise around, people watch, and get some breeze. We toured every road on the island, enjoyed an okay lunch at Beyond the Reef, and window shopped at all the expensive boutiques. We were excited to find affordable souvenirs at Valentine’s Dive Shop and Dilly Dally while also enjoying some delicious cocktails at Blue Rooster. Other than that, we didn’t spend too much on our visit to Harbour Island.

Another fun part of our day was sneaking into the Coral Sands Resort. We originally needed to use a restroom but then we found ourselves in awe of the swanky scenery and comfortable seating. Instead of leaving, we lounged around their lobby and watched the March for Our Lives broadcast on television. Without being noticed, we retreated back to our golf cart to tour the island’s pink sand beaches. I’d really like to stay at that resort someday.

This was such a fun side trip to take in Eleuthera. If you’re hesitant to go to Harbour Island, you should make the trip. It may be a bit pricey if you’re sailing there or indulge in expensive shopping but taking the ferry was quite affordable and we only bought a t-shirt and sunglasses.

Cheers and thanks for reading!
