Sailing Sailing Tipsy Gypsy Travels

A Day in Spanish Wells [Bahamas]

If you’re interested in reading previous blog posts about the Bahamas, read those here. Otherwise, enjoy our day in Spanish Wells 🙂

Our crossing over to Eleuthera was smooth sailing but not with our sails up much. There was only 5 knots of wind and was straight on the nose causing us flat seas with a loud engine running in the background. We could of course adjust our course to match the wind but with it being so light, it made more sense to continue straight forward to arrive before sunset. The entire day was spent with both Tharon and I reading our books and staying occupied with a comfy sail over. We caught no fish, saw only a few other boats from afar, and officially had our most boring passage yet. We even shared a beer to commemorate our calm passage and to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day!

Eleuthera was now in the distance and we needed to figure out where we would stay for the evening. At first we decided that we would anchor in the harbour at Royal Island but with the decent time it took for us to sail over, we anchored outside of Spanish Wells instead. Rounding Egg Island to miss the reefs surrounding the outside, we were on the home stretch. The Eleutherian waters are gin-clear and could see the bottom even at 100 feet in depth.

Spanish Wells

Spanish Wells is a historic city in Northern Eleuthera located on St. George’s Cay. It is two and a half miles long and extends another three miles to Russell Island via a bridge. The area is predominantly a fishing village but has become a popular tourist destination for cruisers visiting the Bahamas. The community is welcoming and accommodating to anything they’re able to assist with. When you arrive, you’ll notice Spanish Wells is a very colorful and clean town to visit in the Bahamas. Charming locals to live there full-time and to attract visitors from all over.

The main catch for Spanish Wells is the Bahamian Lobster or Crawfish as the locals say. The area catches so much that is has been given the title of fishing capital of the Bahamas.

Wreckers

To celebrate St. Patrick’s Day and our arrival to Eleuthera, we treated ourselves to a walk around the cute town and to enjoy an evening out at Wreckers. This restaurant has an exceptional menu with an amazing chef cooking behind the scenes and great service from everyone we encountered. Spanish Wells is spoiled to have such amazing food all around them.

Although we did not stay long in Spanish Wells, we had an amazing time walking around the brightly colored buildings and enjoying the healthy greenery. Such a beautiful beginning to our time in Eleuthera. We look forward to our return again next sailing season!

Cheers and thanks for reading!

Dude, I am shocked that you have no mention of how this is the weirdest island in the Bahamas! From the openly discussed inbreeding, to the “slave island” they just recently stopped blocking he entrance to at night, to the weird drug busts they’ve had in the last couple of years, to the mennonites in the Ford Model T golf cart – that place is a cornucopia or bizarre! Awesome beach though! 😂

Whoa! Tbh, we didn’t see most of that while we were there. We’ll be sure to investigate a bit further on our next time through ><
