While visiting Grand Bahama, we were able to visit the Lucayan National Park. This park in the Bahamas was established in 1982 and is located between Freeport and Freetown at Gold Rock Creek. The park is 40 acres. Featuring hiking trails through rocky cave structures, swampy mangroves, and the most beautiful beach in Grand Bahama.
The park is $5 to visit. Plan to spend 2-3 hours or pack a picnic for an entire day.
Hiking
The hiking trails are easy for most anyone who would visit the park and the guide at the beginning gave us a great description to barely even need the map. Hiking around the top loop, you’ll visit Ben’s Cave, a Sea Cave and Hammock, as well as a burial ground from earlier inhabitants. The caves are quite impressive and the hike is a beautiful walk along Bahamian flora and fauna.
The bottom loop is across the road and features a beautiful walk across boardwalks through the Mangroves to Gold Rock Beach. Another easy hike but should consider going through during low tide to not get too wet along your mini adventure. This area you’ll see plentiful fish and birds of all shapes and sizes. It was fun to learn more nature in the Bahamas but my favorite were the Ming trees that look like large scale bonsai trees. Very pretty!
Ben’s Cave
The unique part of the Lucayan National Park are its underwater caves. Ben’s Cave is one of the island’s inland blue holes. One of the longest charted cave systems in the world, stretching 6 miles! Although you are not able to swim here, you can schedule a dive far in advance to see some very unique marine life. The fresh water is pristine floating above darker blue salt water while the caves display stalagmites, stalactites, and fossils all throughout the underground wonder. Hiking to the caves is a quick and easy one and once you’re down in the caves, you’ll be secluded with the exception of some bats hanging around.
Gold Rock Beach
Along the hike, you’ll make your way to Gold Rock Beach. It’s a beautiful beach with soft white sand and gorgeous variations in blue water. It’s a secluded beach with stunning views. We spent an hour relaxing and cooling down in the calm water.
We highly suggest taking the time to visit this beautiful, secluded piece of nature. I’m excited to see more National Parks in the Bahamas now too!
Cheers and thanks for reading!
